A project developed by SOLUTE to support technical training in medical procedures through Virtual Reality.

One of SOLUTE’s core characteristics is our ongoing commitment to innovation and the development of projects that contribute to technical progress and provide value to the sectors in which we operate. This, combined with our multidisciplinary nature, leads us to dedicate a great part of our activity to R&D&I, identifying needs in relevant industries to create engineering solutions to address them.

Our virtualization division, one of the newest in our portfolio, has established its position in recent years through key projects such as HERMES (an R&D initiative for the creation of tools to support the development of interactive and virtual reality applications) and the development of virtual tours used for technical training across several industries, such as energy or, in this case, a new field for SOLUTE: the healthcare sector.

Over the past year, our work in this area has focused on the development of a simulator for instrumental childbirth for the Gynecology and Obstetrics Department at Gregorio Marañón Hospital. This project, launched in 2023 and solidified in 2024, allows medical students to practice technical procedures in virtual environments before engaging in real-life training with mannequins.

The project was born out of the need for a software solution that enables medical training before using mannequins (which are costly to repair and have limited availability) for students specializing in gynecology. Our solution introduces a preliminary step that does not require logistical infrastructure (being virtual), and since it is a native multi-user application designed for portable virtual reality headsets, it also reduces equipment costs by removing the dependency on PCs.

Beyond technical training optimization, another goal of the project is to demystify assisted childbirth —whether instrumental (forceps) or non-instrumental— for mothers and their families. Even though it is not a surgical environment, the preparation and equipment involved can cause anxiety for expectant mothers, so the solution is also intended to help inform them and their environment.

This development marks SOLUTE’s first step into virtualization for the healthcare sector, making it a strategically significant project. It has also proven to be highly valuable for gaining insights into new applications of XR technologies, medical image processing, and the unique aspects of medical procedures.

As a result, this new development allows us to expand our portfolio of sectors and capabilities, directly reinforcing our multidisciplinary nature, one of our company’s core values. Furthermore, it opens up new opportunities for collaboration with other healthcare areas, where we are already engaged in commercial discussions to implement similar solutions in fields such as psychiatry, pointing toward SOLUTE’s continued growth in the health sector.
