SOLUTE’s new development, AVISDET, puts innovation at the service of biodiversity and the conservation of birdlife in wind farms.

Wind energy continues to evolve and strengthen its presence within the global energy landscape, with recent figures confirming its role as one of the key pillars of the energy transition.

This growth, both in scale and importance, brings with it the need to further professionalize the sector and advance in terms of control, regulation, and social and environmental responsibility.

The preservation of birdlife has become one of the main areas of action, not only to ensure the regulatory viability of wind projects but also as an environmental obligation for operators, who must strengthen monitoring and mitigation measures to reduce bird collisions with turbines.

Therefore, it is essential to have validated and effective solutions that enable compliance with current regulations. In this context, SOLUTE has once again chosen to invest in innovation and development within one of its core areas: wind energy.

AVISDET is SOLUTE’s latest development designed to address this challenge and meet industry standards and requirements. The system leverages computer vision for its detection module, which identifies and tracks birds near wind turbines. It also includes a deterrence module, capable of emitting acoustic signals to safely drive birds away from risk zones, and an emergency module that triggers an automatic turbine shutdown when a collision threat is detected.

Detection, classification, and mitigation deployment process

Detection and classification module:

  • High-resolution industrial cameras (47 MP), with 8 units mounted on a 6-meter tower, providing full 360º coverage.
  • AI models based on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Transformers, enabling accurate bird identification and trajectory tracking in real time.
  • Edge inference infrastructure in a compact and robust unit, allowing real-time processing and fast response without requiring constant connectivity.

Deterrence module:

  • High-power sound emitters, effective up to 1 km distance (60 dB).
  • Adaptive acoustic signals, configured according to:
    • The audible frequency range of each species.
    • Dynamic patterns to prevent habituation and maintain long-term effectiveness.
    • Minimized acoustic pollution, reducing disturbance to non-target species and ensuring regulatory compliance.

Emergency stop system:

  • Automated risk assessment using AI-based thresholds, zones, and alert levels.
  • Intelligent stop decision-making, taking into account species, distance, trajectory, and environmental conditions.
  • Automatic stop and restart functions, optimized to minimize turbine downtime while ensuring bird safety.

In this way, SOLUTE’s development not only helps operators comply with regulatory standards for bird preservation but also maintains the full operational capacity of wind farms, narrowing the gap between industrial development and environmental protection.
